Description

The Eibos Cyclops filament dryer has an inherent design problem. Because the heater is directly below the filament spools when the heater heats up to temp it may overheat the filament to the point that the filament fuses to itself. Eibos says to rotate the filament occasionally but that is impractical so I designed this drive unit to add to the Cyclops so that the filament will constantly rotate while heating thus evenly distributing the heat.

It allows you to disconnect the drive if desired and return it to the original functionality simply by moving the drive gear to engage it or not and turn off the motor when not engaged. I added two latex rubber roller covers to add grip to the filament. Total cost to upgrade is around $15-20. The only modification you need to do to the Cyclops is 3 small holes in the deck and splice into the fan wiring underneath.

I added a connector between the motor and the power source which is the 5v fan, accessible under the platform. Any smaller connector should work. Having a connector makes it much easier to mount.

5V electric motor (1) There are several of these at varying speeds. I ended up going with this one which is 50RPM. This speed is reflected in the video.

695ZZ Bearing (1)

Micro switch (1) This will cut off the power to the motor when the mechanism is disengaged with the rollers. It can be used without it but the motor will run when ever the fan is running regardless of being in the driving (engaged) mode or not, you're choice.

1 - M3 x 25mm flat head bolt with nut

2 - #4 x 3/8" screws (to hold motor to the platform)

2 - M1.6 x 4mm flat head bolts (to mount the motor)

3 - M3 x 4mm set screws (each gear needs 1 set screw and 1 square nut)

5 - M3 square nuts

1 - M3 x 10mm bolt (to attach the aux base piece)

1 - M3 x 8mm Flat head bolt

I also added a sleeve of latex rubber to the driven rollers because the material the rollers are made of don't do well for driving the spools.
