Protective Hard Drive Case

Maximum HDD dimensions:
Length 148 mm
Width 102 mm
Height 27 mm

HDD is attached from bottom with a 95.25 mm by 44.45 mm screw pattern. Check if your hard drive fits and has this mounting pattern on bottom.

Printing

To assemble one case, you need to print a body, a lid, a latch and 2 hinges. 

The lid requires a tiny piece of support for the catch hook of the latch.

It's recommended to use a brim on the body to prevent it from detaching from the build plate during printing. A model with minimal brim is provided where the leftover brim doesn't interfere with closing the lid. The brim can be cut after printing.

If you want to use labels, you can either change colors midway of the print or simply color the text with a marker. There are only a couple of sample labels and a blank one that you can use as a reference to create your own label.

Assembly

Hardware needed for assembly:

• 3pcs 1.6 mm nails, minimum length 27 mm (or other suitable metal rods)
• M3x20 countersunk screw
• M3 nut
• 4pcs screws to attach the HDD to the case, ~5 mm in length

I have also provided “no hardware” models that you could try to assemble with just 1.75 mm filament (HDD installation screws still required). I haven't tested that so I don't know if the latch would work as well.

Latch Assembly

• Insert a nail through the latch parts.
• Cut the nail to suitable length if needed.
• Use cyanoacrylate or other glue to fix both ends of the nail to the loop part of the latch.
• Attach the latch to the body with M3 screw and nut.

Hinge assembly

• Put both hinge pieces in place and insert nails through the body, lid, and hinges.
• Cut the nails to suitable length.
• Glue the ends of the nails to the body to keep them in place.

Labels

You can use double sided tape to attach labels so they can be later swapped.

Caution

You should not consider this case impact proof. HDDs cannot be considered reliable after experiencing impacts. A case could buy you some time to rescue data instead of total drive failure on impact, but the main purpose of this case is to protect exposed circuits and ports on the drive.
