Description

Terracotta pots are porous, meaning that they absorb water from the soil and help it dry out a lot quicker, and also let it breathe better than plastic pots. This is great for cacti, succulents and other plants that want good drainage and aeration.

I wanted a plastic pot with these properties, since terracotta is brittle and quite heavy, and doesn't fit in everywhere.

This pot, when printed in vase mode, will have tiny holes in it, allowing for very good drainage and breathability.

The idea of a vase mode pot that does this is my own, but the technique used for achieving this effect is inspired by Maker's Muse's video on vase mode.

This pot is 120mm tall and 120mm wide at the rim. I don't know if scaling it will work, but it's easy to make your own custom one:

  • Make your own custom pot here. (Customizer doesn't seem to work right now, so you may need to use OpenSCAD). If you are customizing it with OpenSCAD, set fill-ang to a smaller angle like 25 - this will help the fillet under the rim print a lot easier.
  • Open the STL in Meshmixer.
  • Under Edit, select the Make Solid option.
  • In the Solid Type dropdown menu, select Blocky. Click on Update, then on Accept.
  • Click on File → Export and export the model as STL. Done!

This prints great with 0.2mm layer height and 0.6mm line width. Greater line width will result in smaller pores, and smaller width in larger pores. Use 4-5 bottom layers.
