Raspberry Pi mount with optional SSD holder 
for Prusa MK3 series

 

This is based on the Raspberry Pi holder/mount for Prusa i3 by Thingiverse user LeifA.

This is a simple mount that fits the frame of the Prusa MK3S+ (and similar models, of course). It holds my Raspberry Pi in its case and provides space for an optional SSD. Like the original author, I prefer to have my RPi in a standard case that simply slides into the holder.

 

Variants

I'm including two variants:

  • one for the stand-alone RPi case
  • one that has an additional "basket" for an SSD besides the RPi.

You can also download the OpenSCAD file(s) and modify the shape yourself.

Note: When I converted my RPi from SD card to SSD, I initially put the SSD holder on the wrong side of the case - it was actually blocking the airflow of the fan and was interfering with the RPi camera cable, too. The "right" side is the design I'm sharing here.

 

Material 

Note that the plastic needs to flex a bit when you snap it to the frame.

The first version (stand-alone RPi case) was printed in PLA. I have used this for more than a year now and I have not seen any problems of the material softening. 

The latest version (with SSD holder) was printed in PETG. When I peeled it off the print bed, I lost some of the grid pattern since the filament was sticking ferociously :-/

 

Slicing and Printing

To get the grid pattern on the bottom of the "baskets" but not on the holder itself, you can use a modifier box in PrusaSlicer. The dimensions given here are for the model with the SSD holder:

  1. Load the STL into PrusaSlicer (and do not move it around).
  2. Right-click on the model > Add modifier > Box 
  3. With the box selected: 
    1. Under Part manipulation, modify Size to approx. 100x100x5 mm
    2. Under Part manipulation, modify Position to x=0, y=20, z=-14 mm. 
    3. The box should now be positioned as follows:
      • "under" the holder
      • clear the mounting bracket
      • and still cover the base plate of the mounting bracket.
  4. Right-click on the box > Layers and Perimeters. 
  5. Set both Bottom solid layers and Top solid layers to 0 so that the infill becomes visible.
  6. Right-click on the box > Infill. 
  7. Select a suitable Fill density and Fill pattern. I have used 30% and “Grid”.
  8. Select your preferred layer height. I printed with 0.2 mm but 0.3 mm works fine.
  9. Slice and print :-)
