The reason printing sideways is important is that we can take advantage of the layer structuring as it prints. You want long layers of filament to strengthen the part and diminish the chance of your GoPro splitting off at a layer line. Printing sideways like this also increases the flexibility of the mount, which can help it survive shocks from rocks or trees while you're out on the trail. 

I personally recommend printing in PETG or Carbon Fiber Nylon.
