Description

I've been wanting to get into Clone Hero but controllers are expensive these days. There are options out there for 3D printed controllers but none of them were quite what I was looking for exactly.

I ended up remixing two different models into one and making some changes to them.

For the main body of the controller, I used the body from this model.

For the frets part of the controller, I used the Polybar frets.

I then put the two parts together and did some remixing.

Here are some of the changes I made:

  • All of the screws in the build are now M3 size which is typically more common for 3D printed projects.
  • For fasteners, the printed parts now have slots for heatset inserts instead of spaces for nuts.
  • The strum bar mount is now modular. The strum bar sits on its own platform which then gets screwed into the main body of the controller. This way, if the strumbar's mount breaks during use you can easily replace it without reprinting the entire body again.
  • Resized the buttons so that they work with the more common type of keyboard switch

Materials needed:

  • M3 screws
    • For the neck I used M3x20 screws. To screw the neck into the main body I believe I used M3x10. To screw the faceplate onto the main body I used M3x6. To screw the strum bar base into the main body I believe I used M3x5. I admit, I did not take exact inventory of the screws that I used. When you put it together, screw gently until you verify that the size is correct.
  • M3 heatset inserts
  • (8x) Red keyboard switches for the frets, start, whammy, and star buttons.
  • (2x) Blue keyboard switches for the strum bar
  • I used the controller board from this arcade button kit that I had laying around. I'm sure you can substitute this with other options easily.
