Description
I recently bought a Milescraft 1318 DrillMate Portable Drill Guide to help in drilling holes perpendicular to some of my projects. It's a nice little tool, but I was quickly frustrated that there was no obvious place to store the chuck key when not in use. I was worried I'd lose the chuck key if it didn't have a place to live on the tool itself.
There's not a lot of free real estate on the tool without eating into some of the clearance needed for normal operation. However, I did notice that there was about 10mm of unused guide shaft on top of the return spring. I figured that if I was able to design a holder than fit into this space, it wouldn't get in the way of using the tool.
I went through several concepts before settling on this architecture. It's very important that you print the part in PETG, since you need to flex it quite a ways open to slip it over the guide shaft. This allows you to install the holder without disassembling the tool. If you must print it in a different material, I'm almost certain you'll need to remove the guide shaft and spring in order to slide the holder all the way up from the bottom.
Besides the printed part, you'll need the following bits and bobs:
To assemble, you push the magnet into the little “U” pocket. I didn't need glue for my prints, but you may need a drop. Clip the print around the guide shaft, press the hex nut into the hex pocket (or pull it with the screw), and tighten it so that it doesn't rotate!
Happy making! Hope you enjoy.
