I used a raft but it's not essential. There are four small cutouts to locate 20mm rubber feet, again you could probably get away without using any support material too.
Normally I use a wall thickness of 2 layers and floor/ceiling of 3, however this one is printed with a wall thickness of 3 for strength as the infill is only 10%. It's pretty solid.
Drawn up on Fusion360, the gear tray has been designed to allow 40% engagement of the diameter of each gear. This felt like a good amount to secure the gear without using up too much material.
I did try optimising the design to shell from the bottom up to make the object hollow and use a lot less material. However, the savings did not come to fruition as the amount of support material was excessive.
