Description
I absolutely hate having to package every Christmas decor, ornament and Christmas tree, as soon as the holidays end! After searching for compact Christmas trees I wasn't happy with what I found, I wanted something different, classy, minimalist and above all it had to be easy to store. That's when I found a cool render of a folding Christmas tree, I looked perfect, but….. it did not exist in real life, until now.
All parts are oriented correctly and print without any supports, you can even print this on a older I3 style printer, with the 200x200mm bed, as the longer branch fits diagonally on the print bed, you can even squeeze 3 branches on it.
So, what do I need to print?
You will need to print:
1x - Star.stl
1x - Trunk_body.stl
1x - Trunk_base.stl
2x - branch1_2x.stl
8x - branch2_8x.stl
12x - branch3_12x.stl
2x - pla_pins_bottom.stl
10x - pla_pins_size_2.stl
8x - pla_pins_size_3.stl
5x - pla_pins_size_4.stl
1x - pla_pins_top_star.stl
Optional:
All of the pins, can also be replaced by hook version, thus allowing for easier placement of ornaments, lights, etc. Simply print the hook versions instead of the pins.
For adding ornaments to the edges of the tree print:
8x - pla_hook_1.stl
You can also opt for a more compact trunk that can easily be screwed into a piece of wood, for that print:
1x - trunk_body_wood_base
You will also need 4x 3mm screws (at least 15mm, plus the thickness of the wood) and 4x 3mm nuts
Ornaments:
Included are some simple ornaments that fit the aesthetic of this minimalist tree, just print the ones you like or if you prefer, create your own or choose from the many others you can find on Printables. These ornaments will need a small piece of string on the loop so that you can hang them on the hooks.
How can you assemble your own?
Assembling the tree is rather simple, simply push the pins on to the holes, but due to the nature of folding mechanism it can be a bit confusing to explain this step, so please check the pictures provided and the 3d model on Sketchfab for further assistance.
How can I fold the tree?
You will need to remove 1 bottom pin, afterwards the tree should easily fold down.
Can I replace the pins for screws?
Of course, the holes are sized for 4mm screws and you should use lock nuts to further secure the branches.
Can I build this from wood?
Yes, in fact that was the first version that I did (check the photos provided). I added a pdf with the cutting/drill templates if you prefer to build one from wood.
How about print settings?
For the branches, I used 4 perimeters and 10% infill, for the trunk and for the base 4 perimeters and 20% infill. If you print the branches flat on their side you can use a draft layer height (I used 0.32mm layer height), if printed upright, use at least 0.2mm layer height. The pins and hooks, should be printed at 0.2mm of finer.
How can I achieve the same look "snowy" effect that you did?
Easy, simply change colors on the last layers for the color of your choosing, I used glow in the dark filament for extra effect. Also you will need to print the branches upright, this will probably cause the holes to become slightly oval, so either drill them out to 4mm or print with at least 0.2mm layers
P.S. Print extra hooks and pins, they are quite thin and can easily break if you force them.
P.S. 2 See the photos in fullscreen to see the tree in its full glory
