File Separator Racks

Probably the most common way for metal files to get worn or damaged, is by coming in contact with each other in a drawer where they are stored.  These small rack sections allow your files to be arranged to prevent them from touching each other, and also will make it easier to find the file you are looking for.

Each rack section uses 4 10mm x 3mm, N48 magnets (Ebay, Amazon, etc).  They should be a press fit into the holes, but you may find a little glue to be desirable also since there is some variance in the size of the magnets.  I initially tried using only 2 of the magnets per section, but I found that to not provide enough holding power.  You will need a total of 8 magnets for a pair of strips to hold 4 files, and of course you will need to use these on a steel surface in order for them to work.

There are 3 different sizes of the strips to accommodate different file thicknesses, including some wide enough for round or triangular files.  Stagger the handles as shown in the picture for best use of space.

I printed mine out of black Overture PETG, but other materials should also work.  They are designed to be printed with the pockets for the magnets oriented vertically, and the slots for the files against the print bed for best strength.  Don't skimp on filament for the sake of reducing print time.  I used a .4mm nozzle with a .2mm layer height, 4 perimeters, IIRC 5 or 6 top and bottom layers, and 20% infill.
