Description

howdy 3dp partners here's a model of a miniature 2D printer that should look like it's freshly printing business cards. It can store business cards under the lid, as well as a card in the feed and output trays. 

Important: Designed for 88.9mm x 50.8mm business cards (or 3.5" x 2")

It takes some time to print, but assembly is relatively straightforward. But I'll still include some assembly instructions below. If you just want to print it and assemble it yourself, just keep the following in mind:

  1. Layer height of 0.20mm works for everything. LH of 0.30mm might work for the base, but it won't look as good.
  2. Supports are needed for the “2D Base” - you can view the 3mf to see the custom supports I drew in.
  3. Use spare filament to hold the print together. Whenever you see 2mm holes, those are for filament.
  4. Use infill >10% for the Base UNLESS you don't mind some minor quality issues (top layers may be too thin and underextruded). I only used 10% infill cause the prototype messed up and I didn't have that much time to do another one with 20% infill (this actually makes a big time difference for prints with lots of infill).

Assembly

Here are all the parts you will need. The 3mfs have all of this:

  1. Remove supports from the Base, and make sure that filament can poke through the thru holes. You will need to clean these due to bridging unless your supports are able to mitigate this.
  2. Insert the Output Slot Divider into the Base
  3. Anchor the Divider with filament through the Left Side (printer perspective)
  4. Assemble the Printer Roller Holder. The trick to this is to partially slide the silver filament through one side of the roller, slide the Roller Rings onto the filament, and then move the Roller Rings to the proper slots (there are 5 total)
  5. Push the Roller Holder into the front of the Base
  6. Now for the Front Panel (which is printed with one color change). Insert the Attach Blocks (L and R are the same) into the Front Panel
  7. Optional: add small pieces of green/red filament to look like leds, and use a blade to cut off the excess
  8. Insert the Front Panel. You may notice all of the thru holes on these components as these can be used for a more secure fit. But I found the clearances tight enough and the filament unnecessary
  9. Now we can add the Output Tray. But first, use some filament to attach the Output Tray Ext to the Output Tray
  10. Push the Output Tray into the slot under the Rollers. Looking at the underside of the printer, you will see slots for filament. Use filament to stop the Tray from being fully removed if you wish. You may need to crimp the filament a bit (this extra diameter in one direction will prevent the filament from falling out of the printer). Also add the Optional Foot if you wish.
  11. Add the Lid. Filament pieces as usual to complete the hinge
  12. These are definitely unnecessary but I think they add some detail to an otherwise plain print. Push the silver AC Prong (x2), Base, and Ethernet pieces into the correct holes.
  13. Add the Paper Feed Ext piece. Not really meant to slide but rather stay in place. It was difficult trying to make this work as it's a very thin piece.
  14. You're done! For compactness you can slid the trays in most of the way. Have fun with this little printer :D but not too much

Confession

THIS PRINT TOOK ME 12 HOURS TO DESIGN AHHHHGHGHGH 

Although, if you look at my business card, I actually did drop out of college (low brain power-NOT that college drop outs can't be smart, I just happen to be one of the few who dropped out cause I can't function in a classroom/college setting also very unsmart monkey brain), so designing is a very intense and exhausting experience for me. But I will become a 3D design master one day! I think 3D printing is a great way for people like me to keep the brain from doing nothing all day.

Customization

If you want me to adjust anything in the design such as the front panel “buttons” or the scaling of the print (the whole print depends on 1.75mm filament so if you want to scale this we should talk) just lmk. I'm not doing much now that I'm out of school so I'm down for whatever.

P.S. This printer is based off of several printers I have witnessed in real life as well as from google searches images from the key phrase “inkjet printer”
