Gridfinity Stackable Modular baseplates

When stacking several bins on top of each other it can be a bit tedious to access the lower bins. Especially when you place the bins in a box like in my IKEA Samla Gridfinity series (https://www.printables.com/social/145063-akio/collections/484185). To improve that situation I designed a baseplate that can be placed on top of Gridfinity bins like normal bins and is sturdy enough to be lifted.

General usage

You can print any of the baseplates and screw them together with a m3x8 screw (BHCS) and a m3 hex nut. This modularity has a lot of advantages. It gives you the possibility to create a custom grid design, that holds together nicely. You can later on remove the connection and reassemble the baseplates to your liking, saving you from reprinting baseplates. Also you can print smaller modules on smaller printers and assemble it to a huge grid. The baseplate assembled this way is fully compatible with the standard gridfinity containers.

The baseplates are designed to use ferromagnetic screws to act as magnetic counterparts for bins with magnets on the bottom. This saves you from the tedious task of getting the magnetic polarity right on all bins you equip with magnets. They just will stick to the ferromagnetic screws, no matter what orientation the magnets are in. Also ferromagnetic screws are mostly cheaper than magnets.

The baseplates have tapered holes so it should be easy to screw in m3x6 or m3x8 flat head coutersunk screws (FHCS).

Stackability

The basplate is not flat on the bottom. It features the same underside as normal bins would have. That way the baseplate can be securely stacked on normal bins. Also it is beefy enough to be lifted.

Closed vs open

The stackable baseplates come in two versions. One where the base is open and one where the base is closed. The open base saves a bit more material and is a bit lighter. The closed base needs a bit more filament, but when you stack it on boxes it can act as a lid for the boxes below.

It has one major improvement over the original design:

• The baseplates are now stackable. The original baseplates have a flat bottom and are desiged to be placed on flat surfaces. These baseplates cannot only be securely stacked upon another, but also be securely stacked on bins. It allows layered storage of gridfinity bins combined with easy accessibility. This is reached by the bottom of the baseplates being modeled after the Gridfinity system and based on the specification available at https://gridfinity.xyz/specification/ which is shared unter the licence https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0
