Description

With a Noctua 40mm fan in hand, I decided to play around with air flow.

This design pumps air from the back in the case past all the major components on the board.

A little bit is diverted past the bottom to cool the M.2 slot.

I set the fan to turn on as soon as the case hits 40C, and even without heatsinks it stabilized around 70C running my x265 encodes - roughly 50C higher than ambient. Most of the time it idles at about 30-35C with the fan off. Not as strong as the other case as the focus was the fan and flow, but works nicely. Fitting small heat sinks dropped this to 65C.

Super impressed by the fan - I haven't implemented PWM yet, but even at full speed it's whisper-quiet!

Conveniently the two status LEDs are visible through the fan.

The only hardware you need is 4x M3 screw to secure the board, the fan sits snugly held in place.

I used about 60g of PETG to print the one in the photo - I used minimal lighting fill on the top. The side walls might be slightly too thin, as on some of my early prototypes I broke the tabs inbetween the USB ports.

Version 2 should be functionally the same, but with thicker outer walls and a bigger base. The fan duct goes closer to the board, so less air would bleed out over other components.
