Magnetic Poster / Displate Mount

Why I designed this?

I own a significant number of magnetic posters (Displate) and have discovered the shortcomings of their mounting system:

- They are not re-usable and need to be replaced should you move or reposition your art
- If you have smooth walls (Such as silk paint) they do not stick, and fall off (In the middle of the night causing you to think a burglar is in your home)
- Any vibrations through stud walls (Such as from a washing machine) cause them to rattle due to no clearance from the wall
- They are costly to replace (£2.50 per mount, not including postage)

With this I decided to work on a home built system to replace them.

What were my goals with the mounts?

  • Cost effective. Cost parity or cheaper than the displate offering
  • Easy to print. No supports, or complicated setup
  • Easy to assemble
  • Universal; Can work with screws, command strips, or other ways to stick them to the walls

What do I need to build them?

  • A 3D printer and filament of your choice.
  • 15mm x 4mm round magnets. Depending on the strength you may require either 4, or 5 per large mount and 3 per small mount.
  • 12mm x 2mm adhesive back neoprene / rubber self-adhesive strip
  • Glue. I recommend some type of epoxy
  • Sandpaper - To rough up surfaces before glue

Is this actually cheaper?

For a large poster you need 2 mounts from displate. Rough cost £5 (If you buy the pack of 9)

Magnets - £0.57 per magnet x 5 = £2.85
Rubber strip - ~£0.37 per mount
Filament - ~70g. For me £1.40 per mount

Total - £4.62 per mount + glue and other minor costs versus £5 for the offical mount. Roughly inline and these are reusable.

Anything else?

I have designed all the parts with tolerance so as long as your printer is reasonably accurate everything should fit in without too much trouble.

If you find cheaper parts, different size magnets etc please let me know and I will see if I can upload an alternate version.

I am not a professional designer - this is my first time taking on such a project and so far I am happy with the results. Any feedback for improvements is welcomed!
