This is a Decora/Claro wallplate insert for a Philips Hue Smart Button, so that it looks at home next to other North American light switches.
The wall mount included with the Hue Smart Button looks nice, but is nonstandard and can't function in a multi-gang plate.
You can also check out my Hue Smart Button Magnetic Desk Stand if you want to put it on a nightstand or table.
Design notes
- There is space for an embedded 20x2.5mm round magnet. I have created two versions of the model: one requiring a pause to insert the magnet, and one where the magnet can be inserted after printing.
- The depth of the front part of the insert should bring it into near-flush alignment with your faceplate. I've tested it with Lutron Claro and Legrand hidden-screw plates.
- The top and bottom holes are threaded for a 6-32 machine screw found on standard wallplates.
Printing and magnet assembly
- Choose the embedded magnet or non-embedded magnet version.
- Print as-oriented in the .stl file, using a 0.2mm layer height (recommended).
- Double-check the orientation of the magnet! I find it useful to make a small dot with permanent marker (on the back side, so it doesn't show through the thin top layers).
- Tip: You might want to try the ironing feature of your slicer for a smoother top layer.
- For the embedded magnet,
- Insert a pause after layer height 3.20mm.
- Use a drop of superglue to secure the magnet from the back (towards the build plate).
- The .gcode file I've included has a custom pause algorithm. Upon resume it will extrude a bit and begin a 4 second move to give you time to wipe excess material.
- For the non-embedded magnet,
- After printing add a drop of superglue into the cavity and place the magnet inside.
- Tip: attach the Hue button normally while the glue is curing to provide some magnetic clamping force.
Installation
- If you are replacing an existing switch,
- Screw this into the box where the switch was and install the wallplate as usual.
- If you are adding this to an existing switch,
- Get a 2-gang wallplate (or whatever size you need).
- Screw the Hue mount into the wall in the correct position (a screwless plate makes this easy to align).
- Once the faceplate is on, it will look like it a normal double switch.
Safety notes
- This model has not been tested and is not certified by UL or anyone else.
- Magnets are dangerous. Make sure it is well secured.
Other notes
- If you need a version sized for a different magnet, send me a quick message and I should be able to create a new .stl for you easily. Please include the specifications (measure your magnet with calipers, since sometimes they are slightly different than the nominal size).
