Description
So I had a few 5 Gallon jugs with silly excuses for lids. I can fix that!
Okay so in order to print lids that fit your Jugs you will need to do a little Math. if you like math, this should be easy. If you don't, no worries I will help you through it.
All of these lids have a 55mm space for the widest part of the jug's neck. 1.8% increase in size will give you 1mm increase in diameter.
I like using exact measurements so that the lids come off without much effort to avoid extra plastic bits in my guts, since I use these jugs for drinking water. I liked wrestling the -0.5mm sized lid on and off and will use this size for my car oil jug but until I practice printing TPU, I prefer to stick with exact measurements in PLA for drinking water jugs.
-measure your Jug mouth's exterior at it's widest point.
-how many millimeters does it take to reach your jug's measurement from 55mm? This is your Difference Number.
example: If you have a 54mm jug measurement, when starting from 55mm, you need -1mm to get to 54mm.
If you have a 55.5mm measurement, you need +0.5mm.
-Multiply your Difference Number by 1.8. This is your Percentage Change Number.
example: Difference Number of -1mm? -1 x 1.8 = -1.8
Difference Number of +0.5mm? 0.5 x 1.8 = 0.9
- Finally add your Percentage Change Number to 100 to get the percentage you should scale these models to in order to fit your Jugs how you like.
example: Percentage Change Number of -1mm? 100 + (-1) = 99%
Percentage Change Number of 0.5mm? 100 + 0-5 = 100.5%
Keep in mind an exact fit comes on and off with ease and no wiggle room, and -0.5mm will probably hold back a splash if a full jug tips over. Though without modifying I guarantee this PLA print will leak.
That, or you could avoid this little math situation and fill my model's void and adding your own hole. 6 eggs one way ½ a dozen the other.
I have only printed the Dot and Gear lid but there are a few extra styles you might like. I really can't believe I missed pun opportunity… Should have been named “5G Jug-O-Lantern”
I'll keep my eyes pealed for the next one.
Thanks for looking at my designs,
Enjoy!
