Description
This spreading board is shaped so that the insect will appear in flight. The bolt can be loosened to allow the two sides to slide and tightened to snuggly hold the insect in place. The butterfly in the picture is for demonstrative purposes, it was mounted on a flat board before this board was created.
Newer versions are printed without supports. Printed on 256x256 in PLA with the Bambu X1C. Use 30mm M5 bolts for assembly. Wing nuts would probably work better than a standard one, but I like the look of the printed wing nuts. The tops of each side should have some sort of lining for pinning wings or at least to protect the insect. The pictured board has 3mm EVA foam sheets secured with adhesive. I put a layer of 6mm EVA under the board on top of the spreading board base. The base is thick enough so you can turn the wing nuts without hitting the table. Glue the base and the “feet” of the board together after you've attached the two sides together or you'll really struggle to attach the sliding side afterward. I print on a textured plate because it looks cool and seems to help stabilize the base on my stainless steel table when I'm pinning.
