What this is:

  • A single strong mount clip to attach the Prusa MMU2S Spool Holder trays specifically to the Home Depot HDX 30 inch tall wire shelf unit only, using the flex in the shelf wiring to channel and then hold the  shelf wires in slots underneath. However, it  will work with any wire shelf unit as long as the wires are 17-19mm apart.
  • Has a PC4-M10 threaded attachment for a PTFE tube to your buffer

I found that the Home Depot HDX small three shelf black wire standing unit is great to hold filament spools and created this to mount the MMU spool trays. This part locks the five MMU black spool holder trays to these shelves with a clip that requires no screws, although I also include a V14 here that can be used to add an extra clip, although that is not needed.

 

What you need:

  • Prusa MMU2S black spool holder tray
  • PC4-M10 PTFE connector male
  • Home Depot HDX Metal Wire 3 shelf unit (the one 14 inches deep, 30 inches tall, wide, and 24 inches wide, that has wires that form the shelves, where the wires are spaced between 17-19mm apart.

Here is more info on the shelf unit I designed this around.  3-Tier Steel Wire Shelving Unit in Black (24 in. W x 30 in. H x 14 in. D  The nice thing about this shelf unit is that is $40, compact, and sets up in minutes, and  matches the printer style, and doesn't require attaching anything to your walls, and you can always use it for something else if you decide not to use it for this! The shelves are an adjustable height.

 

How to print:

  • - Print five of these, one for each tray. 
  • Each one uses 25% infill PETG, 3 perimeters
  • Paint on supports inside the screw hole
  • Print time is two hours and five minutes
  • You need to supply one PTFE PC4-M10 connector that screws into the front of each one, for the PTFE tube that goes to your buffer solution.

Also, I plan to attach the MMU slot buffer to this top shelf with two zip locks through the holes in the bottom of it, which should look minimalistic and work well.) There is a modified v14 part with a hole that includes an additional clamp with an m12 screw but you can use v13 without the hole/extra clamp which works find.

 

More Details:

The small 3 shelf HDX one sits next to my MK3S+ and MMU2S. I am using the MMU Spool holder trays that came with the MMU. I needed a way to lock the MMU spool trays to the HDX shelves. Also I wanted to add a PC4-M10 insert at the same time to the spool holder. This clip design is a one part that needs no hardware except one PC4-M10. It takes advantage of the small flex in the HDX wire shelves to be able to initially slide it on and then once in position it cannot come free as one wire sits in a slot and the other is ‘grabbed’ by a descending hook. I choose a 41.5mm gap distance in the part as it spans three wires and that was the average distance I measured, plus a 0.5 mm. You might need to try different wires as some as 40mm and some were 42mm.

  • Threaded PC4-M10 hole for PTFE tube
  • No hardware needed, just clips to two HDX shelve wires with a third wire underneath the middle, so spans three wires
  • Wires are not under any stress once in position
  • Holds spool holder tray for MMU in position on rack shelf
  • One part per spool tray, print five in total
  • Minimal supports needed (use brush to paint on in one place:  screw hole)
  • The center part in the back has a depression to match the tray so it doesnt slide from left to right
  • Does not fit the larger wires and spacing on the 5 foot tall larger HDX wire unit. I have both I know.

Special Note:

I am using the MMU2S and thus had to remove the original dual spool holder that was originally above the printer. I found out that with six zip ties you can attach this to the side of an HDX wire very securely and mount two spools on it. This attachment then works with the original spool holder two (see pic). Originally I had these all attached to spool holder trays on two shelves. I then was able to fit all five spools and the slot buffer all on the top shelf of the small HDX unit. I did use a Pol;ymaker polybox for two of them. (see pics). 

 

Two versions here - both are fine:

  • v13 just clips on to the wire rails, and I am using this
  • v14 is the same except it has a hole with an added pressure plate underneath to push against an additional wire. I didn't actually print this version and really test it but just put it up here. It needs a single m3 - 12mm hex screw and an m3 nut to clamp onto the grid bar that runs underneath the middle of the plate to add even more stability
