HoDoHo – Holstered Door Hook

Introduction:

I, like many others, could not have imagined that we would experience a real shortage of consumer goods in 2020.

A rare commodity today is disinfectants. Although we usually have a small supply of isopropanol for our hobby at home, not everyone has it. Apart from that, you need other ingredients for a hand disinfectant.

If you don't want or can't disinfect your hands after every door handle you touch, it only helps not to touch the door. The game is known from pre-Corona times from visiting public toilets with a hand dryer. If you want to leave them, you often have to use the door handle - there is no paper to touch the handle because of the "great" blow dryer solution. Most of the time these doors only open inwards, so you either wait until someone from the outside or inside opens for you, or you get creative.

Now I had seen one of the first door hooks here and thought it was a good idea. However, I was missing a hygienic container, so I asked the designer if he could upload a cover for it, which he did. But all in all I did not like the hook or the shaky cover. The hook design was half-baked (too small and hard to handle) and the cover had no belt clip.

So I decided without further ado to design a model of my own, which meets my own high standards. The result you see here, the "HoDoHo":

The "HoDoHo" is suitable for right- and left-handed people (please check the version). During the whole design process I always made sure that no support or post-processing is necessary.

Description:

With the "HoDoHo" you can open and close refrigerated compartments, doors etc. If you print two (one for right- and one for left-handed people) you could even use it to push your shopping cart. You can also enter your PIN at the cash machine or at the cash desk (but I recommend payment via NFC) or dial the number on the scale in the fruit and vegetable section.

And - last but not least - open the door from the public toilet even after the Corona pandemic.

To avoid having to put the contaminated part in your trouser pocket or to dangle it from a belt strap, I have developed a custom-fit holster. It has a stable belt clip and is slightly tilted forward for better grip. All contaminated parts of the "HoDoHo" disappear safely in the holster. So that one does not have to aim so exactly, the upper side of the holster is funnel-shaped. Nevertheless you should look at it to avoid accidentally contaminating your clothes. Afterwards you simply push the "HoDoHo" downwards until it snaps in. The housing has a clearance of 0.3 mm to the hook on all sides, i.e. there is a total clearance of 0.6 mm. In this way, hooks and holsters can be printed even with small deviations and still fit - and nothing rattles!

Dass wir im Jahr 2020 noch einmal tatsächlichen Mangel an Verbrauchsgütern erfahren müssen hätte ich mir, genau so wie wohl viele andere auch, nicht vorstellen können.

Ein heute seltenes Gut ist Desinfektionsmittel. Zwar haben wir in der Regel kleine Vorräte an Isopropanol für unser Hobby daheim, jedoch hat dies nicht jeder Mitmensch. Abgesehen davon benötigt man für ein Hautdesinfektionsmittel natürlich noch andere Zutaten.

Möchte oder kann man sich nicht nach jedem angefassten Türgriff die Hände desinfizieren hilft es nur, die Tür nicht anzufassen. Das Spiel kennt man ja aus vor-Corona-Zeiten vom Besuch öffentlicher Toiletten mit Handföhn. Möchte man diese verlassen, muss man häufig die Türklinke benutzen – Papier, um den Griff anzufassen, gibt es ja wegen der "tollen" Föhn-Lösung nicht. Zumeist gehen diese Türen nur nach innen auf, also wartet man entweder, bis jemand von außen oder innen für einen öffnet, oder man wird kreativ.

Nun hatte ich hier einen der ersten Türhaken gesehen und fand die Idee gut. Allerdings fehlte mir ein hygienisches Behältnis, sodass ich den Designer fragte, ob er nicht eine Hülle dafür hochladen könne, was er dann auch machte. Aber insgesamt gefiel mir weder der Haken, noch die klapprige Hülle. Das Hakendesign war unausgereift (zu klein und schlecht zu handhaben) und die Hülle hatte keinen Gürtelclip.

So beschloss ich kurzerhand, selbst ein Modell zu designen, was meinen eigenen hohen Ansprüchen genügt. Das Resultat sehr ihr hier, den "HoDoHo":

Der "HoDoHo" ist für Rechts- und für Linkshänder verwendbar (bitte Version beachten!). Beim gesamten Designprozess habe ich stets darauf geachtet, dass keinerlei Supports oder Nachbearbeitung notwendig sind.

Beschreibung:

Mit dem "HoDoHo" lassen sich Kühlfächer, Türen usw. öffnen und schließen. Druckt man sich zwei (einen für Rechts- und einen für Linkshänder) könnte man damit sogar den Einkaufswagen schieben. Darüber hinaus kann man seine PIN am Geldautomaten oder an der Kasse eintippen (ich empfehle hier aber die Zahlung via NFC) oder auch die Nummer auf der Waage in der Obst- und Gemüseabteilung wählen.

Und – zu guter Letzt – auch nach der Corona-Pandemie die Tür von der öffentlichen Toilette öffnen.

Damit man das kontaminierte Teil nun nicht in die Hosentasche stecken muss oder etwa an einem Band am Gürtel baumeln hat, habe ich zusätzlich ein passgenaues Holster entwickelt. Es verfügt über einen stabilen Gürtelclip und ist zur besseren greifbarkeit leicht nach vorne geneigt. Alle kontaminierten Teile des "HoDoHo" verschwinden sicher im Holster. Damit man nicht so genau zielen muss, ist die Oberseite des Holsters trichterförmig. Dennoch sollte man hinschauen, um nicht versehentlich die Kleidung zu kontaminieren. Danach schiebt man den "HoDoHo" einfach nach unten, bis er einrastet. Das Gehäuse hat an allen Seiten einen Abstand von 0,3 mm zum Haken, d. h. insgesamt gibt es eine Toleranz von 0,6 mm. Auf diese Art und Weise können Haken und Holster auch mit kleinen Abweichungen gedruckt werden und passen dennoch – und nichts klappert!

Post-Printing

Remove the hook and holster from the print bed, push the hook into the holster and let it snap in. Then hang the holster with its clip on the belt. It's that simple.

How I Designed This

At first I determined the rough form by means of drawings. Then I defined the dimensions and made sure that thicker door handles up to 42 mm diameter (as e.g. on glass outer doors of buildings) would fit. To give the whole thing more stability, I widened the upper edge so that almost the whole thumb can rest on it and thus exert pressure comfortably. There are two finger eyelets for better grip. All places that can come into contact with the hand have been rounded off.

After I liked the first print of the hook, I started to design the holster. The motto here is "form follows function" - at least as far as possible. The whole thing should be as minimalistic as possible and at the same time look futuristic, because from now on I count the hook to my EDC and so I will have it with me every day. To prevent the thumb rest from protruding too exposed and possibly getting caught on your clothes, there is a counterpart on the holster, which also serves as a threading aid for the hook, so that you don't accidentally touch your clothes with your contaminated side. Then the hooks for locking the hook were added. I can't stand it when something rattles with every step. Now when the hook is in the holster, it doesn't move a millimeter, unless you see it coming out deliberately.

Zunächst habe ich mittels Zeichnungen die grobe Form festgelegt. Anschließend habe ich die Maße definiert und dabei darauf geachtet, dass auch dickere Türgriffe bis 42 mm Durchmesser (wie z. B. an gläsernen Außentüren von Gebäuden) passen. Um dem Ganzen mehr Stabilität zu verleihen, habe ich die Oberkante verbreitert, sodass beinahe der ganze Daumen aufliegen und so bequem Druck ausüben kann. Für die bessere Greifbarkeit gibt es zwei Fingerösen. Alle Stellen, die mit der Hand in Kontakt kommen können, wurden mit Abrundungen versehen.

Nachdem mir der erste Druck des Hakens gefiel, habe ich angefangen das Holster zu designen. Hier heißt es "form follows function" – zumindest weitestgehend. Das Ganze sollte so minimalistisch wie möglich sein und dabei futuristisch aussehen, da ich den Haken ab jetzt zu meinem EDC zähle und somit jeden Tag am Mann haben werde. Damit die Daumenauflage nicht zu exponiert übersteht und ggf. an der Kleidung hängen bleibt, gibt es ein pendant dazu am Holster, welches gleichzeitig als Einfädelhilfe des Hakens dient, sodass man nicht versehentlich mit seiner kontaminierten Seite die eigene Kleidung berührt. Dann kamen noch die Haken zur Arretierung des Hakens dazu. Ich kann es nicht leiden, wenn etwas bei jedem Schritt klappert. Wenn der Haken nun im Holster ist, bewegt er sich keinen Millimeter mehr, es sei denn man sieht ihn willentlich heraus.
