Description
I had an old, slow laptop that had not been used for years. I repurposed the screen, using an external controller board, designed and printed a case for the controller board and ‘feet’ for the monitor brackets.
The controller board is unique for each LCD panel, the number is on the back of the panel and controller is available on Ebay, Aliexpress etc - for my panel - LP156WH3(TL)(S1) - the controller board is model M.NT68676.2A.
The lid for the case is a snap-fit design, so no screws required. I mounted the controller to the bottom of the case with the nylon stand-offs provided with the board.
The control buttons and LED required small holes, and extensions for the buttons through the lid. The button PCB is secured with 2 x M3x8mm screws, adjusted to a height were the extensions just sit lightly on the buttons so there is no movement until the button is pushed.
The case is mounted on the rear of the screen with double-sided tape and the cable routed to the base of the LCD panel from underneath. I used a rotary tool to remove some plastic to allow the cable and connector to remain flush, and existing laptop trim panels to conceals everything. A nice, clean finish.
This makes an excellent additional monitor for any device with HDMI, DVI, or CGA outputs.
The case was printed as:
0.15mm Quality, 15% Infill, Prusament PLA, paint on supports along the tops of the socket openings, and the flange on the base for the nylon standoffs.
The monitor stands were printed as:
0.30mm Quality, 15% Infill, Prusament PLA, no supports.
