Description
My many year old pop up sticky note holder was knocked off my desk and broken.
I took it home, borrowed its dimensions, and altered it slightly for FDM Printing. ***Note - I didn't design the shape or operation of this device - I translated it's dimensions to model and tweaked it some for 3d printing viability. All design credit goes to the original manufacturer.***
The spring was taken out of the original and transferred into my completed unit for similar operation. It's dimensions are 14.5mm ID and 40mm overall length. The closest I've found to a spring that you can purchase for this is McMaster Carr part # 8969T984.
I've included a file for a printed spring, that works well enough, though a bit stiff. I printed mine out of nylon, as I find PLA based springs are too stiff and tend to take a set after repeated use.
PLA or PLA+ should be fine for all the other parts. I used 0.20mm layer height for all parts.
The base prints with supports on the bottom only. The ‘ears’ that retain the lid are of minimal overhang and should print fine unsupported.
The button will need to be printed on it's face, with support for the ears that lock it into the base.
The lid should be printed on it's side and shouldn't require any supports. The bridged sections are short enough. Use all perimeters/walls for the lid.
I added a small base to the spring, in lieu of a closed coil end, to aid in stable printing and good bed adhesion.
Assembly - set your spring into the base ( closed end down if you printed yours ) and set the button with the logo facing up, on top of it.
Squeeze in the ears of the button as you work it into the slots of the base and release them into the groove to retain the button under spring pressure.
Place your zig zag/pop up sticky notes onto the button. Feed the first sheet through the lid's slot and press the lid down over the locking tabs of the base, one side at a time.
The fitment is purposely tight and will require a bit of prying to remove the lid when your notes run out.
The lid will wear in a little after a few removals, making it easier to install and remove. I found it easiest to pop up one corner by pressing from the underside while pulling upward, then the adjacent corner.
