Description

Magnetized dust collection couplings are not my original idea, but I was tired of searching for a model that fit the many unusually sized dust-ports in my shop, so I made this one parametric. Assembly involves gluing your magnets into the part (I used superglue), fitting on your hose or tool, and (optionally) tightening a hose clamp.

For general use, I've uploaded .stl files with some standard dust-port sizes (and one with threads for a 2.5" dust collection hose, like this one), spots for six 8x3mm magnets, and the values I found to work well for the other variables.

If you would like to create your own set of couplings, use this OnShape link to open the project, and then click the “Make a copy to edit” button in the upper right corner (I believe you can view the project without an account, but you cannot copy or edit until you've signed up - OnShape is free for personal use). I know OnShape is not as popular as other CAD software, so some of the images I've uploaded with this design should act as a walk-through for those that want to customize this design once you've made a copy to edit. The variables I've built in are as follows:

  • ID_Coupling: Inside diameter of coupling side - as a minimum, this should be the ID of the hose you use for dust collection.
  • H_Coupling: Height of the coupling side.
  • H_Transition: Height of the transition section.
  • t_Wall: Wall thickness.
  • OD_Tool: Inside diameter of the coupling side that connects to your tool (ID of the print → OD of the tool) - measure the OD of the tool dust-port. If the tool dust-port is tapered, measure the OD at the approximate middle of the dust-port. Hose is somewhat flexible, so I used the nominal hose size, but if you're shooting for a precise OD for the print, that would be OD_Tool + 2*t_Wall.
  • H_Tool: Height of the tool dust-port side - this is effectively the amount you want the printed coupling to overlap the dust-port.
  • n_Magnets: Number of magnets - holding power depends on the size and number of magnets you use. I found that six round 8x3mm magnets (like these) work well to hold the coupling together when in use, but not so strong it's difficult to separate.
  • OD_Magnet: Outside diameter of the round magnets you plan to use.
  • t_Magnet: Thickness of the round magnets you plan to use.

Any changes I make to the design will be reflected in the link above, and I'll try to document changes here as well. That being said, I'm very happy with the design as it stands, and have no plans for changes.

In addition to the variables, if you need to change the shape of the hose “threading”, the design of that feature can be found in the “HoseThreads” folder in the design timeline.
