Description

I really like pigeons but I don't like cleaning their shit so recently I have embarked on a quest to stop them from nesting on my balcony for the third time. Those models are the results of that struggle.

Spikes can mounted to different surfaces (e.g. balcony railings) using various clamps and frames. You can connect spikes into a series by printing a wider clamps and inserting spikes from both sides. Spikes have rounded corners so that they shouldn't harm the birds - just make the surface very uncomfortable for them to sit on.

Following models for mounting spikes are included:

  • Clamp for 34mm x 80mm railing
  • Clamp for 30mm x 60mm railing
  • Clamp for ~10mm glass pane
  • Flat frame with screw holes
  • Flat radial frame for 35 deg corners

If you want to use clamps for connecting spikes into a series, just print them scaled 2x in width (while keeping other dimensions unchanged).

Printer settings

Make sure to position the mount models so that holes are vertical. With that placement you can safely print using 0.6mm nozzle and 0.4mm layer DRAFT print setting.

The only exception is the radial frame which cannot be placed this way because of the shape. I printed it with 0.2 layer and cleaned it up later using a knife.

I recommend printing with PETG or other materials with a higher temperature resistance. PLA tends to become very soft on a hot summer day and the birds will take advantage of that by bending the spikes! Speaking from experience 😂

Source files & kudos

In case you'd like to remix the models, I've included the original Fusion 360 files.

Spike design was inspired by Print Flat Bird Spikes by David D. Kudos!
