Description

Overhangs are particularly problematic for rounded surfaces and edges. This benchmark aims to uncover such problems. And since a benchmark is useless if it always delivers nice and shiny results, I have made this benchmark so tough that I doubt that any available printer will deliver prefect results. But it is also made to avoid complete fails of the print, which would result in no usable result either.

I was very impressed by the first prints that I did on the Prusa i3 Mk3S and the Prusa Mini. Loaded with PETG from DasFilament.de, both delivered an almost perfect result on the lower side of the big arc. But even they could deliver nice results on the lower side of the little mushroom.

In comparison, the Ender3Pro, loaded with PLA from DasFilament.de, produced really well visible imperfections, also on the big arc. Watching the print on the mushroom, it became clear that it is mainly the insufficient part cooling of the Ender3Pro. I tried another print with a 120mm producing 2m/s airflow over the complete print bed, which resulted in noticeably better results, confirming my theory.

Print instructions

Print this part in any configuration you like, without support of course.

The colorful parts in the pictures were printed at 0.15mm layer height with a 0.4mm nozzle at 230°C, with 15% gyroid infill, from PETG. The black parts were printed at 0.20mm layer height with a 0.4mm nozzle at 215°C with 20% rectangular infill from PLA.

Pro Tipp: If you are not satisfied with your results from PETG, dry your filament in the oven. I made the before and after tests with one spool that I had out in the open for some weeks, and the results where absolutely convincing, especially on stringing.
