Description

It's a dice box, a D&D terrain prop, and a jail all in one! Impress, entertain, and create your own stories with this! I got inspired by the dice storage flash contest and designed my own dice storage… with a twist!

It's a dice box

It is a dice box and it can hold many dice including your special extra large sized dice. Don't worry about the gate being to weak, because it easily held all the dice in the picture (including the heavy metal dice) with no problem while taking a shake.

For usage as a dice box just put the dice jail on it's back, open the gate by sliding it up and then rotating it away, place all your fancy dice in there and close it back up. That's it!

For reference, I was able to easily fit 25 normal sized dice and one ping pong ball sized dice in there. It could also fit in your player character if it's 1/60 ish scale.

It's a terrain piece

Not only can you use the dice jail purely as storage, but it's also a nice piece of terrain to aid your D&D and other tabletop campaigns! It's a jail with a very cellar-like appearance. The jail has one big gate on the front, 4 small windows, and a small elevation inside that can be used by the imprisoned as either a bench or bed. Multifunctional jail furniture!

Looking at it from the top it's 4x3 tiles (each tile is 25mm or ~1 inch). On the inside this means that prisoners will have a ‘spacious’ 2.5x2.5 tiles on the ground and a long 2.5 tile bench on one side. Watch out housing market!

For reference, this jail should easily fit 4 player character models of a 1/60 ish scale inside. It can also fit another 12 on top, but what are they doi- ARE THEY DRILLING A HOLE TO GET INSIDE THE JAIL?!

I initially wanted it to come out of the printer textured and all, but I don't know what campaign your running, so I don't know how you'd like the end result to look. Instead I opted for flat walls and tiles that allow you to paint and create your own texture as you require. Take a look at the pictures for a quick spray paint job I did on my print just a few seconds before uploading this model! … is that paint on my keyboard … ?

It's an official dice jail™

Did you ever run into misbehaving dice? The ones (hah) that only roll low numbers and will take any opportunity for mischief when they know it's a saving throw? Into the dice jail with those dice!!

With this official dice jail you can easily lock up those dice to prevent them from causing any more harm during you glorious campaign! Just beware of lock-picking-owls…

It's easy to print

It's just one piece. Print in place. Load it into your slicer and print. Oh and NO SUPORTS ARE REQUIRED EITHER!! I kept the angles such that most printed will blast through it, and even if you printed doesn't have enough cooling it should still come out fine. Just call it ‘battle-hardened’ or something!

When it's completed take any sharp apparatus that you own and snip of the small connector pieces at the bottom that make this design so much easier to print. And that's it!

PRINTING NOTE: THIS MODEL IS INTENDED TO BE PRINTED WITH THE ‘BOTTOM’ OF THE JAIL FACING YOUR PRINTBED - THUS JUST LIKE HOW IT'S PICTURES IN THE IMAGES!

It can be customized

Just download the STEP file and adjust it to your hearts content. Or just print it and customize it with paint and other materials. Or just tell yourself that you will customize it one day, but just keep using it the exact way that it came out of the printer... that's fine too I guess?

It can be improved

This design, the print, the photo's and this text was all done in a few hours of my time for the sake of joining the Printables Dice Storage flash context. After having it printed I already thought of some ways it might be improved, but more testing is required:

  • The gate can sag a bit due to large-ish tolerances on the print in place parts. No dice will escape, but making the tolerances smaller could increase both durability and how much it will impress the others at the gaming table.
  • That's it for now… waiting for the paint to dry on my printed dice jail and then I'll test some more.

Thanks for getting this far. Let me know what you think, share your makes, and keep on rolling!

Note: no owls were harmed in the making of these photo's. Owl is 47mm in scale * 60 is close to 3 meters or ~10 feet in the real world!
