Design for a magnetic iPad Holder that can be mounted to ¼ inch thread bolts (e.g. a tripod head). This has been designed to print on the Prusa Mini+ print bed and has corner supports to make optimal alignment of the iPad against the magnets easier.
This may work on other versions of the iPad Pro 11 (assuming the magnet placement is the same) but I am unable to verify as I don't own them.
I have mounted mine to a 2020 aluminium extrusion rail above my desk that I also use to hold my camera. This allows me to use it as an additional screen via Sidecar on my Mac or EasyCanvas on PC. It can easily be mounted elsewhere though.
Required fixings
4 x 12mm diameter x 4mm thick magnets
7 x M5 x 12mm button head bolts
7 x M5 nuts
1 x ¼ inch 20 thread heat-set insert
Parts
In order to make sure the design would fit onto the Prusa Mini+ print bed it comes in 6 parts:
1 main backing plate - this aligns the magnets with those inside the iPad.
Should be printed diagonally to fit on the Prusa Mini+ print bed. The included 3MF file is configured for this and has a brim for extra stability. The brim is easiest to remove with a deburring tool but a craft knife will work too.
2 corner support arms - guides ipad into place and provides a bit of extra reassurance.
2 locking plates - locks the magnets into the backing plate and support arms in place.
1 mounting bracket - mounts the backing plate to ¼ - 20 threaded bolt.
Assembly Instructions
After you have printed the parts listed above follow these instructions:
Use a soldering iron to melt the heat-set insert into place on the mounting bracket. I got mine from Amazon and they seem quite standard but you may need to adjust hole size if yours are drastically different.
Place the 7 M5 12mm bolts into the holes at the either side of the backing plate and in the holes in the center. The heads of the bolts should not protrude.
Lay your iPad face down on a flat smooth surface
Place the backing plate on top with the holes in the corners for the magnet facing up.
Carefully insert the magnets into the holes, making sure the polarity is correct to pull them into place.
Slide the support arms over the bolts on each side of the backing plate.
Slide the locking plates over the bolts on each side of the backing plate.
Screw the M5 nuts into place.
Slide the attachment brace over the bolts in the center holes.
Screw the nuts into place.
The assembled item can now be mounted to anything with a ¼ inch
Notes
If you wish to design your own attachment bracket the distance between the centers of the screw holes on the main backing plate is 30mm.
