Description
I love seeing our garden filled with different animal species, because each one plays a vital role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem. However, in our little urban enclave, birds - especially the smaller ones - often seek refuge in the canopies of the larger surrounding trees to avoid potential threats from neighborhood cats.
That's why I decided to lend a hand and help birds settle closer to us, away from harm's way, by designing a discreet and modern birdhouse that blends in with the landscape. The round shape turned out to be the least intrusive, with a charming "hobbit hole" vibe. The entrance and interior dimensions are in line with the recommendations of the European Bird Protection League. You can print the small perch, but like me, you might prefer to find a small piece of real wood to insert in front of the entrance.
The back of the birdhouse features a series of holes, allowing you to secure it to a branch or trunk using raffia, wire, or nylon collars. I chose not to fill it, so that the birds can pick and choose their own preferred materials for comfort. The birdhouse is regularly visited by small birds, though I don't yet know which species will ultimately choose to make it their home.
