heavy spool holder => 0.25 up to 10kg

November 30, 2023
Description
TL;DR
Free standing Heavy Spool Holder for friction less printing with big spools up to 10 kg, works also great with 1kg spools, you need 4 bearings to build one, but no screws or glue, printed without support.
Collection
update 2023.0715
- added v3, slightly longer best for 3kg/5kg extrudr spools
I recommend this version.
update 2023.0414
- added STL, second roller version with an higher angle and less material
- assembly tips
Motivation
Used this from amazon and find them hard to place in parallel so that bigger spools (heavy) role clean and smooth.
Much better 3D printed version with strong rollers.
Let's get started
You need 4 ball bearings:
(608ZZ inner diameter = 8 mm, outer diameter = 22 mm, thickness = 7 mm)
Printed with PETG Jet Black and an amazing layer height of 0.45mm.
The picture shows an early state, the final version uses only the long rods one the left and i reduced the amount of plastic for the sides. I like the open hex versions but added 3mf files for closed versions too.
Print one set:
Insert the bearings:
The inserts are chamfered, best way to insert the bearings is to place a bearing on a table and press the roller onto the bearing until it is completely inserted.
Put the hexagon sticks/rods into the sides, this needs some force, they slide in 15mm. They are stiff because they have to be stiff. If necessary you may sand the edges a little bit to make the first entry a few mm easier. I use a hammer or a screw clamp to press fit this connection.
Put carefully - no force! - the rollers with the bearings over the rods:
Last step press in the second side, you can also do that with a hammer.
Done. Dropped out every other spool roller i was using. Much better than the single side ones.
