Description

Here is (another) vertical spool holder using ball bearing.

I designed this one because all other I found where complicated to assemble (screw and bold needed), or lack a guide in the bearing for the spool edges.

This is designed to be assembled only by insert parts into each other by force.

The provided parts are for 608zz ball bearing. But any other models can be used, as the thing is parametrized. So it's possible to open the joined Fusion 360 model, and ajust the value to fit your ball bearing models (inModel worshop,Modify->Change parameters, use the parameters set in favorite).

Beware. Don't trust the theorical measure of your bearing: depending on manufacturer (especially for low cost china bearing), real inner and outer diameter can be different by 0.1 or 0.2mm. Use a caliper to measure them. Bearing coming from a same batch usually share the exact same error (measure one, the others should have the same size).

Low cost bearing are not an issue if you can precisely measure them. It's even recommended, as for this thing there is not enough speed or mechanical effort requiring quality bearing.

For a complete spool holder (2 stand), you'll need:

  • 4x groove printed part
  • 2x stand printed part
  • 4x ball bearing (608zz for the supplied STL)

Print Settings

Printer:

RenRen 3D Pro (Kossel XL)

Rafts:

No

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.2

Infill:

40%

Notes:

Printed in PLA. At least 40% infill is need to be strong enough.

Supports (everywhere) should be used for grooves, but if your printer is good enough with overhand, you can try without. Support are easy to remove.

Depending of your printer precision and filament quality, holes/axles may be too lose or too tight. If so, you can ajust your slicer settings.

*Recommended. With recent version of Cura, the parameter horizontal expansion is great. Use a positive value (e.g 0.1) if the join is too lose, or a negative value (e.g. -0.1) if it's too tight.

  • Else, try reducing or increasing the flow of material.

Post-Printing

After removing supports and cleaning parts:

1 - Put the ball bearing in the groove. You may need a little hammer to force it in.Watch the way: the groove has a stop on one of its side ; insert the bearing by the side without stop

2 - Put the groove + bearing in the axis of the stand, the side with stop first. Again, a little hammer may help.

Done!

Note: It'll works if you insert the groove in the wrong side. The recommended way is only to reduce risk for the groove to split of the bearing.
