Description

UPDATE:  Caught it in action.  Blobs were created due to my printing profile not decreasing the fan speed.  The tip of the probe caught a huge blob with enough force to tilt the sensor but it just snapped right back into place on its own.

For the standard Ender 3 V2 version, go here: https://www.printables.com/model/484860-ender-3-v2-magnetic-bltouch-mount

Ever have your BLtouch “accidentally” crash into a model or part of your printer?  Me neither….but in case I do and break another BLtouch probe pin or entire probe, I created this magnetic adapter for the Micro Swiss NG Extruder to hold the BLTouch.  The space for the BLTouch probe is minimal and I had to get creative with some of the geometry.

An M48 test yields a 0.00387 standard deviation between probes which is decent.  The filament totals 5g but I do not know the total magnet weight.  It is definitely heavier than the original mount from Thingiverse but it is also has less flex when using PETG.  The original model printed in PLA is stiffer but easy to snap when hijinks ensue.

The mount should work on any printer with similar hole spacing in the gantry plate.

Assembly

  1. When installing ensure that all blobs, seams, and strings are removed from the mating surfaces between printed parts.  Depending on your layer height, you may need to shave the magnet slots for a tight fit.
  2. Once you are sure the magnets will fit, arrange them in a N-S-N one part and S-N-S pole orientation on the other.  This as close to a Halbach array you can get with 3 magnets.  Use super glue if the magnets will not stay in place.
  3. Attach gantry adapter plate to the gantry plate.  The top screw hole is recessed and requires that the m3 bolt be completely within that recess to ensure proper magnet alignment.
  4. Attach BLTouch probe to the Probe Mount part.
  5. Attach BLTouch cable.
  6. Snap into the two parts together and ensure there are no visible gaps by applying some pressure.
  7. Adjust of the Probe Z offset.

Hardware Needed

  • Six 6x2 neodymium round magnets

Print Settings

  • Material:PETG (PLA may work?)
  • Nozzle: 0.6mm
  • Infill: 100%
  • No supports

Rant

Sometimes I wonder if my printer is held together with gum and twine.  I'm sure that I can trace it back to something I did or didn't do but the chaotic experiences between exactly the same prints are annoying.  I've had it all:

  • Motors overheat?  Yep.
  • Z axis stops mid-print (maybe from heating)?  Of course.
  • Model releases from bed and wedges between the frame and hotend/probe?  You wouldn't expect it, but yes.
  • Misconfigured stops cause carriage to crash probe into frame and lead screws when large print attempted?  I can't make this up.
  • Probe fails to deploy causing hotend to try to imprint the nozzle into the glass bed and bend the X axis extrusion?  “I can do this!” is what I imagine my printer saying.
  • Probe strain relief at the hotend damages intermediary connection and causes the nozzle to impersonate a fraking rig?  Oh, you betcha.

Disclaimer:  My printer is not a PRUSA but is still priced in a range where I would expected a better ratio of success to failure.  It has seen some things though….many things.
