Tissue Box - Yawning Charlie Chaplin.
You can snatch a tissue using this old comic gag.

- v1 - initial release, quick and hacky just to see if this could be done prior time is up.
Known limitations:
- printed Tissue Box Supporters as gcode are 10mm in height to speed up printing, but it makes using hot glue a bit tricky (watch out for your fingers), I'd suggest using 20mm in here.
- 2x2 print of Charlie Chaplin makes the hole in the mouth a bit too small to pull the tissues easily - better scale it to 3x3 or use different tissue box.
- no support for the plywood, you need you do it on your own.
Original Idea:
Idea was to be able to pull a tissue from the mouth of any character, and I thought that Charlie Chaplin could match here just because it would look like a small comic gag.
At first I wanted to create a full 3d printed plate, but that would take a lot of things to do:
- convert image to vector and import as model to the printer
- slice big model into smaller parts
- print different parts in different colors (now this is limited to 3 colors: white, gray, black) or maybe print silhouettes and fill in with resin? or print all in one color and paint it in specific colors.
Due to material and time constraints full 3D print was dropped (at least for v1) - the models are there, for the future to be adjusted if someone needs it.
I've printed a photo (well, should have used vector, but no time!.. not to mention better office printer…) on 4 A4 plates, and I must say it a bit' too small, but works with certain tissues.
I also have a remix idea - for example a printed half of the person (flat or in 3D) and allow to:
- pull out the tissue from the pocket in the suit jacket - insert a face of your favorite character, say James Bond
- from the nose - especially for those tissues with a moisture in them, ha!
Requirements (v1):
- 3D printer, at least 10x10x1cm print size, any filament, print time 2h
- normal printer to print the photo in parts + spare print paper
- cardboard or plywood in the size of the printed photo (A3 or bigger), around 2mm thin
- hot glue or any glue that can glue plywood + paper/plywood+plastic
- small hand drill, especially useful if it is on accumulator
- drills - 3mm + enlarging drill (multi-land drill) or filer
- pliers or small wire cutters
- pen
- sharp knife or scissors
- black paint (can be in spray paint) or black whiteboard marker
- protective eyewear / gloves
- tissue box, duuuuh
- optional - extra wood block to make it stand
- optional - small magnets if you want to stick it to metal surfaces
Assembly (v1):
Adjusted for speed. Should be doable in about 1h.
- start 3D printing 'Tissue box supporter', current gcode is limited in Z size to 10mm to print it faster (around 30min per copy), you need at least 2 printed copies.
- warm up hot glue
- print photo of Charlie Chaplin (search over internet how to print image resized to multiple pages), I suggest A4 3x3. Notice how horribly my printer prints grays :D
- assemble printed photo, cut out the margins, glue pages together. Fix visible errors with black pen
- cut out mouth from the photo
- lay don assembled photo on the cardboard/plywood and mark the mouth hole with a pen
remove photo and cut out the hole (start with a drill and then use pliers or other tools to remove parts.
- cover edges and around the hole with black paint or black marker to hide the plywood
- open tissue box, get one tissue out and put it through the hole from the back , adjust position of the box so it suits better to your needs (mine was rotated)
- take printed ‘Tissue box supporters’ and attach them to the back of the cardboard with glue (watch out for fingers!). You can use 3 legs to make it easier to slide the box in from the side.
- turn around the plywood and attach assembled photos to the plywood - use glue on the edges.
- remove tissue box and add glue between assembled photos and plywood so it sticks better.
- behold your creation!
Making it to stand on its own:
- add supports to the plywood from wood or metal to make it stand on its own.
- attach small magnets to the tissue box or plywood to make it stick to metal surfaces.
Iterate with bigger print sizes ;)
