Description

I wanted to take my 9'' fanatic fly air SUP (http://www.fanatic.com/product/fly-air-2/) out on the lake, but the fin setup that comes with it out of the package is made for wave-riding.....so i decided to print a bigger fin to be able to paddle a little bit straighter ;)

The fin is printed out of 6 individual parts (due to the maximum boundary of the Makerbot Replicator 2) whereas 3 make one side. the 2 grid part click on the respective base part to guarantee a more rigid connection.

Then glued together (I added a coloured sheet of plastic-foil in between for a nice effect) and covered in three layers of fiberglass-fabric and epoxy-glue.....and then hand-sanded forever :) and finished with some clear-spray-paint.

As the front guiding edge of the fin looked a bit messy because of the warping of the 3d-prints I decided to add a layer of red spray-paint on the edge.

I reused the brass pin and pieces to fix it in the fin box from an old broken fin.

The base fits in the the standard "US Box" (the maximum that can fit in ;)

The overall shape of the fin is loosely inspired by one of the future fins (http://www.futuresfins.com.au/sup-1/)

Notes:

a heated print-bed would be much much better as the warping distorts the print pieces a lot and a lot of clamps are needed to glue them together and bend them back into their intended shape....

Post-Printing

lots of gluing and sanding....
