Description

I recommend you customize and print the Stackable Gridfinity Rugged Storage Box instead.

Update Feb 2024:

Continued work on this model led me to essentially re-create the Rugged Box entirely in a parametric design. However, it appears that bulbasaur0 beat me to it. I now no longer recommend you use this project, and instead just print his “stackable” Gridfinity Rugged Storage Box which has all the features of the Rugged Box, all the features I wanted to add, and some very valuabe additional features.

For those who don't want to explore, the following settings of the stackable box will create an object similar to the original rugged box:

  • Bottom Height: 5
  • Top Height: 1
  • Gridfinity Stackable: Off
  • Reinforced Corners: Off
  • Top Grip: Off
  • Stacking Latches: Off
  • Latch Style: Clip
  • Third Hinge: Off
  • Handle: Off
  • Label: Off

Update 2023:

This should be considered a BETA project. There are some newly-discovered bugs that I'm currently working out. If you would like to help by testing, please do, but be aware that the models, as currently posted, may not be 100%.

It appears that removing 0.5 mm from the “back” of any insert solves most, if not all, of the current problems. I'm still testing with different sized bins, but this should give you a starting place. The “back” of the insert is the flat side that touches the inside of the lid.

PjotrStrog's Rugged Box is excellent, but there is a slight clearance between the top of a “full-height” bin and the bottom of the lid when closed. This allows for small items in the bins to escape or the bins themselves to dislodge if the box is tossed around.

This insert for the top lid takes up that extra space and provides a “bin bottom” pattern that holds the top of any bins in place just like the base does for the bottom.

The model should have enough clearance to make it easy to pull in and out if you don't want to mount it permanently. I use double-stick tape to mount my inserts in my lids. Using foam tape will give you a positive seal that should hold in even very fine particles.

You can also “merge” this with the existing lid STLs to print the lid in one shot. Both STLs should be centered on each other, with the insert lifted 1.6 mm above the print surface (if printing the lid outside-down). While this will create some slicing funkiness, it should look and operate just fine. I am working on STLs specifically for merging to avoid this.

This is tested only with the Rugged Box but should work for bilboDD's GridBox too. Similar sizes to the Rugged Box are posted, and a Parametric Fusion360 file is available should you want to customize your own.

The Rugged Box states it is designed for “full-height” bins, which I've discovered means 7U bins (with a total height of 46.4 mm, or 7 × 7 mm + 4.4 mm), which this insert is designed to secure. Shorter bins obviously won't work, but you should also be careful of stacked bins, as the clearances will accumulate and produce extra space at the top. I have been using the Gridfinity Rebuilt OpenSCAD models for my bins.
