Description
These are simple models of the Earth and Moon I made for my orrery project.
These can be scaled to any size you'd like, but I designed them to be small.
I printed the Earth at 15mm in diameter, 0.1mm layer height. Painted on supports in a couple areas are helpful (see below).
I made the land masses protrude a fair bit so I could easily paint it. I used acrylic paint (green and tan) and a very small brush. There's currently a hole halfway through the Earth sized for a 3/32" tube.
I printed the Moon at only 8mm and 0.07mm layer height! A small brim is needed. This is incredibly tiny, but it worked well for my project. It can of course be scaled up, but the craters might not look so good since I didn't put much effort into making them perfectly round, which doesn't show at small scales. There's currently a hole halfway through the Moon sized for a 1/16" tube.
I'm a sucker for details and trying to incorporate realism into this stuff, so to make the Moon I used a real Lunar surface map to place the most prominent craters (translating this flat map to a sphere is what caused the craters to become oblong, something I'm trying to figure out how to fix):
