Description

[edit - the current gcode file prints a model with fairly substantial walls. This makes for a robust moon, but is not ideal for lighting purposes. Currently working on slimming down via the model creation process.]

I could not find a moon lamp design suitable for the massive 350mm or 13.7" print volume of the XL, and thought this would be an impressive model to show off the print capabilities with.

Scaling existing, smaller 8" or 10" models designed for the mk3 print volume creates issues around wall thickness or the thread size for the IKEA fittings, so I created a new model from scratch. All the credit for the software tools and workflow go to moononournation (instructables, thingiverse - please send any support their way), and NASA for releasing high resolution, 23k moon surface maps.

I used relatively high refinement settings and tweaked wall thickness & surface feature height to balance fairly easy printing with a 0.6mm nozzle, and balance weight with the overall looks, settling on this design for now. The resulting model needs about 1.5kg of filament to print, and just about comes together without supports. The raw STL files are roughly 5 gigabyte in size, and cause issues for most programs. Prusaslicer is holding up amazingly well, though.
