Pour Spout for Gallon Can (updated)

The cheapest way for me to buy alcohol for build plate cleaning is to buy denatured alcohol in a 1 gallon metal can. Unfortunately, pouring out of these cans, even using a funnel, tends to be messy. To address that problem, I designed this pout spout.

In researching the technical details for making this, I found that these cans are called "Steel F-Style Can" with "1.25in alpha cap." See the photos for a drawing with the cap dimensions (essentially a nominal 1.3in internal diameter 7 pitch thread).

For those trying to create this cap/spout in other CAD software this may help : I used a 1.4in internal diameter with 7 TPI (threads per inch). I truncated the threads by 1mm and rounded the thread tops with fillets to better match the rounded thread profile on the can neck. The total thread length was 12mm.

Print instructions

Print in PLA using the 3mf files provided, although I recommend PETG (see material recommendation below).

I expect that PLA will hold up to use with denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, and even acetone for brief exposures. PETG would be a better choice, and the best choice would likely be nylon (but I am not yet set up to print nylon). I use PLA for my print because the low cost and ease of use make it a good choice for prototyping. However, I will use PETG for any additional prints.

As a final note on filament type choice, this is of course dependent upon the type of liquid you plan to use it with. I suggest consulting a chemical resistance chart to choose a filament type that matches well with your planned use.

Note that I included a spout cap in the print - for use when keeping the spout on the can. Note that keeping the spout on the can will result in long term exposure to solvent vapors, which may not be a good idea. For myself, I only intend to put the spout on the can when needed for dispensing.

I needed another copy of this print so I followed my own advice and made it in PETG. I added the 3mf and gcode files for PETG.
