Description

Voron V2.4, Trident, V0.2 and Micron Spool holder

 

Important note

Be mindful of the type of bearings you use.   You don't want too much free spinning.  Try to find cheap bearing (it's not every day we can say that !) or use printed bearings.  The ones I use don't roll too easily

This is the 608 I'm using:

Design intents:

  • Replace the standard Voron spool holder
  • Roll on bearing instead of Teflon tube for consistant friction
  • Able to remove panel without removing spool holder (V2.4 & Trident)
  • Mount on 2020 extrusion (V2.4 & Trident)
  • Mount on 1515 extrusion (V0.2, Micron) with 3mm or 5mm backplate
  • Design to allow printing the Roller.stl in different material. Specially TPU/TPE for better grip
  • All parts designed to be easily printed without support
  • Accept Filament roll up to 80mm wide
  • Accept roll with inner diameter as low as 34mm (useful when using cardboard spool clamp)

BOM:

  • 2X 608 printed bearings (I use:  https://www.printables.com/model/17916-printed-bearing-608-no-balls-no-assembly)
  • 2X M3 Heatset inserts
  • 2X M3 x 8mm (for bearing cap)
  • 2X M3 x 12mm (mounting to frame)
  • 2X M3 T-nut

Printing:

  • For V2.4 and Trident, there are 2 versions of the Roller body depending on which side of the extrusions you want to mount
  • Any material will do. It’s outside the chamber
  • STL are all oriented correctly
  • No support required
  • My printing specs:
    • Material: ABS and TPE85 for Roller
    • 4 walls, 5 Top layers, 5 bottom layers 
    • Infill: 40% cubic
  • Roller.stl – Recommend to use random seam placement so you don't get a hard line at the seam

[Update 2024-07-30]

  • Reduce size of body and cap to allow smaller inside diameter spool to fit (specifically when using cardboard spool clamps).  New min diameter = 34mm
  • 2020 mount = Replace single M5 screw & T-nut with a pair of M3 screws.  Better stability and better clearance for panels.  Same BOM for all models

  • Added “Roller body_5mmGap_1515.stl”
  • For V0.2 or Micron (1515 build) with thicker backplate of 5mm
  • Renamed the default 1515 mount to indicate it's for 3mm backplate

  • Added the V0.2 model
  • Added a Voron Logo to the Bearing cap
  • Removed the PDF as it's duplicate information

[Update 2023-06-13]

  • Recommendation to use printed bearings instead of high quality 608 to minimize the risk of over spinning the spool and get filament tangled outside the spool
  • Recommendation to use random seam placement on the Roller.stl
