RECENT UPDATES

January 13, 2024

  • Licensing has been updated and opened up to BY.
  • Moved old updates to the bottom of the description to keep intended information up top.
  • Added a zip file (Modular Pallet Rack Base Kit Step Files (No Panels)) containing step files of the base kit (without any decking) for an easier time remixing.

WARNING: Your M3 x 6mm bolts will disappear before you can even get more. A rivet kit is available as an alternative for printed fasteners.

As a minimum, fasteners are only necessary on the beams (you can probably get away with one bolt on each side). Uprights do not necessarily need them, it just helps hold everything together and keep it solid in once piece. The main goal was to be a bit realistic rather than easy to use without hardware.

Additional Accessories will be published separately

Inspired by a post-it note rack I saw on reddit. I wanted to make some racking that was as modular as the real thing, with details that at least try to simulate the real things; while being printable.

The units can be paired side by side… Vertically.. Back to back… Or all of the options together.

There's a different selection of pieces you can put on the beams in the current revision (for shelving). From Heavy Box Beam Waterfall grids, to instep grids, to welded sheet metal panels. Each one is made to resemble real material while being printable. Variations were made for those that prefer an easier printing time; The models were initially made for looks more than ease of printing. Lots of bridging on them.

Functionally, this can support quite a bit of weight. on one set of beams alone (assuming even distribution). I've had about 43 pounds sitting on the most recent revision for a week without any failures. All parts printed in PLA+. I have not tested with PETG to test for deflection (haven't used the material). I have not tested to see just how high you can go while remaining stable.

The beams are just wide enough with a little bit of give to fit standard 8.5 x 11 paper sheets. Put two racks back to back and you now have paper trays for filing or other uses. All parts were sized with a 235 x 235 print bed in consideration as a limitation. Beams can be positioned in 10mm increments along the length of one rack.

All non-simplified instep grids need supports on the very ends of the channels. Everything else for all the wire decking relies on bridging over reasonable distances. I've had success printing the heavy box reinforcements sideways without needing supports. You may need to try out different print orientations. Sideways works best for part strength.

I've included a step file of an insert for the primary frames, and of a section of the beams (the bracket) so that you may use them to make your own attachments/parts for this; without having to convert STL files.

UPDATES

October 25, 2023

  • Added PDF detailing holes on the new beams to help with accessory designs. Note that the attachment holes are the same as uprights, for use with M3s or printed rivets.

September 05, 2023

  • Labels have been created, added to the files and zip has been updated to V 1.4. There are two variations (flush mount and offset) of 3 different sizes (small, medium, large). Each label plate is 12mm tall. for label maker tapes. The offset ones are moved away from the beams so that you can still place labels even with accessories mounted underneath them.
  • Labels can be mounted in multiple possible positions and combinations (except the large, large takes up the whole beam).

New kits and major update released!

  • Files have been re-named in hopes of clarifying what's what when it comes to inserts
  • Added a single upright coupler (instead of two small pieces) as another alternative. Not sure why I never did this one.
  • Added accessory beams! The original beams are being kept here for those who do not intend to use any accessories that fasten/clip into beams. The new beams have some tabs for snapping labels (And a very satisfying snap, at that) or other things into place, as well as mounting holes for dividers and other kits. These will be the default beams for the kit from now on. I currently do not have any label plates made, but they will come soon to this kit as a base addon for the beams.
  • Tweaked the beam bracket step file a little bit.
  • All 3 uprights have been updated to the new revision. Important note about this: You will not be able to use the new uprights side by side with old ones (or rather, you can but features will be 1mm off vertically), but you can still stack them as usual. This change was necessary for future accessory systems to function. If you intend to use features that attach to two beams vertically, it will not line up with the old set of uprights.
  • Removed the half-upright coupler, it is no longer needed with the new uprights.

August 30, 2023

  • Hardware-free alternative coming soon! A sort of rivet system is in the works. It allows you to basically use little printed pins that you can use in place of M3 bolts.
  • An overnight weight test (~30lbs at the center of two beams, one single pair of uprights) showed it to function just fine, however the structures are a little less stable, since they're not rigidly fastened together.
  • There are square headed and round headed versions. Both versions require two pins per hole.
  • There is also a little tool in the kit to make removal of them easy. Insertion works well with square heads using the tool, but an alternative solution needs to be found for round headed ones (pushing them in by hand works).

August 26, 2023 - IMPORTANT NOTES - Future update

  • revised uprights!  V2 Uprights (All 3 will be modified) removes 2mm overall in height (1mm at both ends) so that your stacks with couplers maintain even spacing for the beams. This will not affect your current parts or the compatibility with any old/current parts. This is done so that the dividers can function regardless of what hardware you use. The slots and holes for the couplers were moved in 1mm on each side. This means that the half height couplers are no longer needed as a specialty piece.
  • There will be new beams in the base kit with some mounting holes for accessories.  A divider kit is in the works that will require this and it opens up the doors for more mods/accessories to be made (i.e. mini dividers, label holders for organizing, backing panels, external trays that hang off the beams, etc.
  • I will be re-organizing how the base kit files are sorted, and potentially renaming a few to try and simplify things/make it easier to find.

July 15, 2023

  • Added a half height coupler under Upright_Inserts > Single_Rack_Stand. This coupler does not have the spacer in the center so that the uprights rest directly on each other (to mimic a full rack in height). I added it after realizing that if somebody were to use half-height uprights, it would alter the alignment by 2mm if they were to use them with regular ones side by side. Since there's no spacer, they can only be used for vertical stacking.

June 19, 2023

  • Modified spoolholder couplers to include text, little easier to identify which is for what.
  • Added a half height upright.
  • ZIP file also updated to reflect these changes.

June 18, 2023

  • Added a stubby upright model!  This upright can only hold one set of beams vertically, and has insert slots top and bottom. Added it in case anybody wanted to use the racking and only have a short section somewhere. Or maybe you just want a low profile option on your table.
  • Zip archive updated to V1.1 to include this.
  • Side note: Other accessory kits have begun being created/published to my profile.

June 17, 2023

  • Added reference drawing for designing inserts to fit on step beams

June 10, 2023

  • Added two sample STLs to test out print tolerances. BEAM TEST.stl and UPRIGHT TEST.stl
    • If you find that the hole size tolerances are too loose for you, please let me know. I used the drill size for m3 fasteners (2.65mm) as the hole dimension. I did not tap threads in mine, I simply roll formed them using the bolt. They go in tightly at first but it holds very well. The lead in chamfer helps guide the bolts in a bit, although that is rather dependent on how your printer prints. Mine bulges a little on those edges so it's a bit tighter to start off.
  • Added minor details to description
