UPDATE 2025-05-26: Added “100mm-tube-connection”, to be used with https://www.printables.com/model/1337372 for ducting to IKEA UPPÅTVIND!

UPDATE 2023-01-09: Added the possibility to use a filter on the inside of the cabinet (Inner-Filtercover.stl), as I noticed pulling air through the filter was much more effective for airflow. Also added .f3d and new .step

To get rid of the smell and fumes from my Mk3s in the IKEA Platsa enclosure I designed a fan and filter holder to use with my Corsair ML120 fan and some active carbon filter (used for kitchen fans). I recommend using the Noctua Noctua NF-F12 iPPC (Industrial) fans for better performance, in combination with a fan controller (I switched to NF-F12 IPPC-3000 in 2025).

It will work on any enclosure wall that is 18mm thick. Without the funnel it will probably work on others as well, or cut the funnel to desired height in the slicer!

I'm running the 12V fan from a 11V PSU off an old random device I found and soldered on a suitable connector on it, and then connected it to an IKEA Trådfri outlet controlled with IKEA Trådfri motion sensor. So whenever the printer is moving, the fan and lights are running :)

Installation instructions

  • Drill a 111mm hole in the enclosure.
  • Press-fit the funnel in place from the inside (fan side)
  • Mount the fan and the fan holder in place with longer wood screws. The holder is held in place with the same screws as the fan. Keep note of the notches for orienting the fan cover correctly with the fan cable. The funnel will be kept in place by the fan holder.
  • Mount the fan cover
  • Install the filter holder with shorter screws on the outside (the holes are a few mm offset from the fan screws).
  • Cut some filter material and press in place with the filter cover. Use a filter with 8-15mm thickness. I am currently using a 15mm thick filter that is squished in place by the filter cover. Thinking of adding another layer of filter for smaller particles but the fan is having a tough time pushing air through it as it is now.

The fan needs to be running at full speed in my case in order to get any flow though the filter. But it seem to be sufficient to get rid of the PLA-smell in my room with my current fan and PSU setup.

For building the IKEA Platsa enclosure, check this out.

Print instructions

Printed in Prusament orange 0.2mm layers.

“Inner-Filtercover” is designed for 0.3mm layers. Not tested printing the other parts in 0.3
