Description

Holds two rolls of standard cellophane tape (aka Scotch tape) in an oversized or near 1:1 retro cassette. Side opening help keep track of how much is left on the primary and spare rolls. Print in your favorite colors and customize the labels for just the right look!

Don't forget to print the included pencil for some rewinding goodness.

Updates:

  • Improved the compact version (v2) with wider cutter and opening, The opening in the older version was a bit smaller than the tape width making it harder to use. Only the body and teeth files were modified.

  • Added a compact version that is 60% scale of the full size. This makes it nearly the exact size of an actual cassette, just thicker. The hub now has an adapter that fits into the tape roll then over the hub. I found it best to insert the tape in use into the rear slots furthest from the cutter and put an empty hub into the other slot. This provides room in the finger opening to grab the tape.

  • Added a new version (v2) with removable tape cutter. If the teeth break or fail to print correctly they can be replaced without printing the entire body. The cutter also prints flat providing more strength and definition to the teeth. Some adjustment to the cutter's thickness (z scale) may be needed if the fit is tool tight or loose.

Supports shouldn't be necessary for the cassette body if your printer can manage 45mm bridging for the top surface. I printed two without supports and 5 top layers. The top surfaces were flat but the finish was not as good as it could be. Not sure if it was my filament, or if some support would have helped. All other areas printed fine without supports. The hubs should be printed on end with no supports. I used 0.28mm layer height for the body and 0.24 for the hubs, 2 exterior walls and 15% infill.

For the labels, printed the included PDF. I used (terrible) self-adhesive shipping labels for mine. Cut them out (yes, the circles are a pain, but take your time) and stick onto each side of the cassette. Add a personal touch by labeling it as you would a mix type or favourite album ;)

Push tape roll onto a hub until it rests between the two ridges. If the roll is very difficult to get on you may need to file down the ridges just a bit.

Insert the hub in from the bottom and push up until they snap into place. The tape on the hub closest to the finger opening loops over the top and can be cut with the spiked cutter. The second hub holds a spare roll of tape. Once in place, you can rotate the hubs with your finger, or print a scaled-up pencil for a more authentic feel.

A few rubber feet or pads on the bottom would be great to keep it place on your desk.
