Description
This is a piece of adaptive equipment that aids the user in holding a pencil when they otherwise are incapable of holding a pencil in the traditional manner or if doing so would cause discomfort. This may be the case in a person who loses hand dexterity, strength, or function due to accident, injury, age, etc.
The model can be used for left handed or right handed persons by putting the pencil in from the appropriate side (ie: to go from right handed use to left handed use, remove pencil, turn model over and reinsert pencil).
This tool provides an accessible way for a person who may have not been able to write at all, write legibly, or write for extended periods of time be able to improve their writing abilities in order to better, or more efficiently meet their basic needs.
I designed the model to be held in the following two manners depending on the need of the user, however, any other grip that improves the users ability to write is also great!
Print using whatever default settings you usually use. You don't need supports, there's no bridging, and the overhangs are reasonable.
The pencil hole is a hair over 7mm, which according to my extensive testing (like 7 or 8 pencils…) fit most pencils I had handy in this random drawer at work. If the pencil is too loose, a rubberband or pair of small gaskets can help hold it in place (which may be advisable anyway, since the typical person who may need this tool will likely also have trouble with a tight fitting pencil). I've included a small test print for you to check pencil fit. You can scale the model slightly in either direction while still maintaining its comfort and functionality.
