Description
A simple to print and easy to use stand for charging both an iPhone and Apple Watch. Easy assembly using a mixture of dovetail joints and friction fits. Make it your own by printing the parts in different color combinations. It uses Apple's high quality magnetic chargers to provide reliable fast charging.
I designed this stand for a couple of reasons. The first is that I had bought a similar type of stand from Amazon, however, it had very poor electronics which cause the watch to turn on randomly at night and heated up the batteries. I also wanted a stand that was very easy to place both the watch and phone on at night in low light.
This stand makes use of Apple's high quality MagSafe charger for the phone and the Magnetic Fast Charger that came with the watch. It is recommended to use a reliable 40W+ power supply so that each device has enough power to fast charge.
The MagSafe charger does seem to work with many thin cases. However, it does work best with cases that have built in magnets for MagSafe adapters, which also really improve the magnetic strength and therefore the phone then pops into place more easily.
The base is sized such that the camera bump on the back of the phone hangs off the right or left side and therefore allows phone to sit flat and optimizes the induction charging.
- 4 parts needed: Base, Top, Vertical, and Wire Cover. (Note: there are two size options for the base. One standard size and one for the Pro Max phone as it is quite a bit larger).
- No special print settings and no supports needed. I like to print the sides that are most visible down on the build plate for an extra smooth finish.
- Parts use dove tail joinery (inspired from woodworking) - making them easy to assemble and easy to print flat (and allows for many fun and unique color combinations).
- If needed you can glue the dove tail joints (plain white glue or CA glue work well).
- If the Wire cover part is too loose or too tight - scale the part's width by a few percent to get a nice and tight friction fit (you want to be able to remove this part in case you want to replace or remove the chargers in the future).
- If the chargers are slightly loose you can add a layer of masking take around their perimeter.
- Zip tie the cords in the back if desired for extra cable management bonus points.
- Rubber pads can be added to the bottom to keep it from sliding around (if needed).
- If you have an iPhone Pro Max print the ProMax version of the base (file ends in: _Base_ProMax). Otherwise, all other phones should work fine with the standard size.
