BATTERY SAFE DISPOSAL BOX

July 11, 2023
Description
I saw a horrifying statistic recently following the death of a small child, and immediately wondered if there was a 3d printed solution that would help;
Button batteries are responsible for an extraordinary number of children's hospitalisations and sometimes result death after swallowing.
This disposal box will hold a large number of batteries, it's easy to print and contains an asymmetric series of baffles designed to make it impossible (for an adult) to remove an object once fully inserted in it.
There are two slots (22mm x 6mm on the top) and (12.5mm x 4mm on the underside) use the smallest one that your battery will fit into, and make sure that the battery clears the slot completely and is securely in the storage void. I use a teaspoon handle to push larger batteries past the baffle initially.
While the prospect of a fire from a button battery shorting inside the box is remote, a bit of sticky tape over the positive side will eliminate that possibility.
NOTE - it makes a very attractive rattle and I could almost guarantee that if left in the hands of a toddler, a battery will simply pop out of it.
PLEASE DON' T ALLOW IT TO BE USED AS A TOY!
It's a 50mm (2 inch) cube, is easy to print (mine is in PLA - 0.3mm DRAFT mode in Prusa Slicer).
