What do bandit camps, archeological dig sites, war camps, traveling troupes, and forest camps all have in common? Work tents!

I love tents as scatter terrain for rpgs, but I find the most tedious part of crafting them is getting the core shapes down, and I've never been able to make scratch-built tents with playable interiors… so I've tried to solve it!

Introducing my Work Tent Framework! This set of models provides a framework to print the frames for work tents of any width and length, measured by playable interior, from 2" to 6".

For a tent of any size, you need:

  • a Base, in the Width x Length you want
  • two A Frames in the Width you want
  • two Buttresses in the Width you want
  • two Buttress Connectors in the Length you want
  • one Brace in the Length you want

Simply glue the Base, Frames and Brace together, and separately, glue the Buttresses and Buttress Connectors together. If you don't want/care about a playable interior, you can also glue the Buttresses to the Frame.

Once you've printed the pieces and glued them together, you can finish crafting the tents however you'd like. I'll put together a tutorial video for my process sometime this week, but I generally suggest using stir sticks on the base as wood panel, and then making the tent fabric by draping cut paper, staining it, and dousing it in watered down Mod Podge to make it rock-solid.

Files are organized into Bases, which are named by internal playable Width x Length (e.g. ‘Base 3x4’), Frame pieces to fit a chosen Width, and Brace pieces to fit a chosen Length. They're all interchangeable - so pick the size of tent you want, and go for it!

As always, comments and criticism is welcome – and I'd love to see your prints and the end results on your table :)
