Description
I just got a couple of the Next-Gen Filament Spool Holders from Printed Solid and they are really nice. They are milled from Aluminum Composite Panels like their Next-Gen printer enclosures. https://www.printedsolid.com/products/adjustable-spool-roller-kit
The only complaint I have is the printed spool roller, which has a design that requires support material and the quality of the surface printed above the supports directly affects one of the 608 bearings. My support game is not fantastic and so my rollers spin very slowly due to ugly print surface dragging on the bearing.
So I redesigned the roller to eliminate the need for support material. While I was at it, I hollowed out the body of the part so that it prints in half the time. I made the majority of the length of the roller 1.8mm thick, which is 4 times a line width of 0.45mm, which is tuned for a 0.4mm nozzle. This eliminates the infill for the majority of the height of the part, decreasing the probability that the part will topple during print. The original design gave me a warning of “print instability” when sliced in PrusaSlicer.
Using PrusaSlicer default “0.25mm draft” profile on a Prusa Mini, this prints in around 1.5 hrs, instead of over 3 hrs, as the original design took.
As always, I have included Native SolidWorks and STEP format files for your modification pleasure.
