Description
This idea was inspired by the survival paracord bracelets that are meant to ensure the wearer always has a length of cord. I always liked the Monkey's Fist knot, and thought why not put something useful inside rather than a wooden ball?
With this, you get your length of cord and a firestarter or basic fishing kit (hook, line, and bobber) too.
Total cost one each of these should be well under $1 and could be a good project for older kids, youth groups, or scouts.
Firestarter Cubes
You can mold the firestarter cubes using the mold model.
Tips for molding:
sand mating surface of die haves with sandpaper on a flat surface. This will reduce gap to minimize wax leaking.
heat wax with a double boiler type system (set the wax jar in hot water)
Don't overfill the mold with sawdust or other media, this will prevent wax from filling cavity
Warm mold and media before pouring. I used my filament dehydrator at 65C. This might not be necessary, but it should help the wax fill the cavity before solidifying.
cool mold in freezer to make separation easy
If you are going to make a lot of these, you make want to find a faster way to make firestarter cubes ( maybe make a big block and cut off pieces)
Printing tips:
I printed everything in PLA with 0.6 Nozzle
No models require support
Print fishing kit with a brim, model has a small flat on one side. orient this against the bed. Use minimal infill (so it floats well, It's your bobber)
You may want to increase the walls on the knot jig for toughness.
