Description

Inspired by Polymakers cardboard spool adapter, this protective rim and spindle will help alleviate common issues with cardboard spools as they become more commonplace. The models themselves are light on material and you can print them individually if you only need the rim or spindle.

Having a spool attachment in place can help prevent or compensate for damage to the spool rim, such as dents and delamination. The internal spindle guard can help reduce friction on some spool holders, as well as prevent cardboard dust.

The default files should fit generic cardboard spools with ~198mm Diameter and 2.8mm flange thickness, such as Polymaker and Duramic spools.

Customization:

I created the model to be fully parametric using Onshape, so that anyone could customize it to their needs. Onshape is a browser-based CAD application which is free to use for hobbyists. The public model can be found at the following link.

Modifying the values in the variable table can produce a rim to fit any spool. You will need an Onshape account; Once you are logged in an option to “create a copy” should appear in the corner. This will allow you to modify a duplicate to fit your needs.

PLA+, PETG, and Nylon are good material choices. ABS / ASA can work but tend to delaminate on thin walls when flexed. Print hot for the best layer strength.
