This is a recreation of what the scientists though it was Mars before the first missions arrived to it, the Mariners. The model was made using MATLAB R2016a with the map available on the Planetary Society site. This map does not actually represent the topography, but what it was visible on the surface. The more brighter the surface, more "white" in the map and more the altitude its represents. Actually the darkest area, known then as "mare" (seas) are the most elevated region o Mars; and the northern hemisphere (while brighter) is a wide depression which it's probably a impact basin. Despite this, this post try to make a representation of how was the view of Mars at this time, so it is good to think that the "mare" must be in lower elevation than the rest. Other outdated features noticeable in the model are the "canals" striping the surface. They were probably an optical illusion, because they are not an actual thing.

The file's names explained: name_1_x_10_y.stl is 1 : x* 10^y. So _1_6_10_7 is 1:600000000 or one in 60 million.
