This model was rendered using MATLAB R2016a on the ICQ model of the PSI made by Philip Stooke from the data of the NEAR Shoemaker mission. 

The file's names explained: name_1_x_10_y.stl is 1 : x* 10^y. So _1_6_10_7 is 1:600000000 or one in 60 million. 

253 Mathilde

Mathilde is a small C type asteroid, that was visited by the probe NEAR Shoemaker in its way to Eros. The C type asteroids are composed of carbonaceous material, they are darker than other types. They are the most common type of asteroid, occupying more than the 75% of the total population. There is not any planet nor dwarf planet in the Solar System based on carbonaceous material, but it is theorised that a carbon based planet could exist in other planetary systems.

  • Orbital period: 4.31 yr. 
  • Composition: Carbonaceous, rubble pile. C type asteroid.
