Description

This is inspired from commercially available products that cost ca 160 Euros.

It uses mosquito bait (scent) you can get from Amazon.

This design should cost you less than 30 euros in case you need to buy everything.

To make this mosquito trap you need a 120 mm computer case fan (120x120x25 mm) which costs 5  euros on Amazon depending on the model (we do not need a very silent fan for this). You also need  a 12V power supply and enough cord (10 to 15 m).  I didn't need to buy either because I had some former PC cases in the basement plus old power supplies. As a result my mosquitos get a high end super silent fan !!!

The parts of the Moskiller are the following

  • 1 fan support (print in PETG - any color)
  • 3 traps (print in black PETG)
  • 3 top grids (print in black PETG)
  • 1 cover support (print in black PETG)
  • 2 covers (print in white PETG)

As this is an outdoor design you NEED to use PETG.  Mosquitos like black.

Mounting instructions:

Put the fan in the middle of the fan support, cord should face up and the fan label should face the side of the fan support that has a big hole on the side (exhaust). Cut the 3 pin connector and  solder the cord to 2 of the wires so that you get max speed - usually between 1300 and 1800 rpm. Then insulate the connection with tape. Mount the cover support using 4 M3 screws. The cord goes through the hole roughly in the middle of the cover support. Then put 2 Traps on top of the fan support. The one above the exhaust is the bait holder, while the other one is the actual trap ! Put the bait and then the 2 top grids. You can now mount the covers with 2 M3 screws. You are done !

Quick check of the airflow: put a sheet of paper on top of the trap; it should be sucked in. If it cannot stay there that means you need to flip the fan to get the right airflow.

Hunting tips:

The Moskiller should be placed in the shade at about 5 to 10 m from your deck. You need about 30 cm of clearance above the trap so that the airflow is not hindered by leaves or branches.

After a week, take out the trap (maybe cover the top grid with some paper) and put it in a paper or plastic bag,  tie the bag and put it in the freezer for about one hour.

You can use the third trap/top grid to replace the one you just put to freeze .

Get the trap out of the freezer , empty it on a sheet of paper and count your catch. If you have more than 50 mosquitos , the hunting spot is OK (the more the better)  if not, you need to move it to find a better one.

Extra tip:

This will hopefully reduce the population of mosquitos close to you deck. (you might need 2 or 3 Moskillers in different locations).

But as an extra step you should also eliminate new mosquitos by killing the larvae. This can be achieved by putting a few black buckets (in other places in the garden) with some dirty water and some larvae killer; namely Baccilus Thurengensis Israelensis or BTI (you can get it on Amazon). This bacteria kills the new mosquitos before they hatch.
